Rector's Report   

RECTOR’S REPORT

Last year, I identified three focus areas for 2010:

--Simplifying our parish life and ministry

--Celebrating our missions and outreach efforts

--Growing in our identity as a multi-ethnic, multi-national, multi-generational parish

 

Simplicity:  We have spent much time this year looking at our ministries—developing last spring a picture of our parish of that like a house, with a Front Porch, a Living Room, a Work Room, and a Roof—to give us a picture of how different ministries connect to each other and to specifically make it easier to help newcomers move more completely into the life of the parish.  We have had well over a 100 visitors and newcomers this past year—each one was invited to Who Is Jesus, Anyway? and then invited to grow in their faith and opportunities to serve.  The remainder of the Annual Report is structured around the themes of this “house”.

 

Celebration:  Our investment in missions and outreach remains strong—indeed is growing.  The Vestry has agreed to re-shape the budget and to plan ahead for 2011 to form a new team to coordinate our financial giving to various mission efforts.  Our ECW this year was specifically concerned to re-invent itself as an active partner for missions and outreach.  Ron Davis, our Harvest Weekend speaker, gave some practical input and inspiration to helping the parish make this a dynamic part of our life and ministry.

 

Changing Identity:  Placing our name on the Church wall captures this sense of our changing identity.  It says, “We are open for business.”  Combine that with the new Concerts By the Park and the Choir’s extra effort to sing portions of Handel’s Messiah on Christmas Eve, add in the outreach to FIT and the new Welcome Gift Bags on Sundays, and you begin to get a picture of a Church that is reaching out to the Community and inviting everyone to come in and join us.

 

This year, the Church of the Blessed Redeemer, our daughter congregation, will move into their new building!  Fr John Wesley called Fr Ron Manning to start this congregation for west Palm Bay.  Fr John moved to Pennsylvania and has now retired; Fr. Ron retired and has now moved to Palm Coast; and Blessed Redeemer continues growing right here in Palm Bay.  That’s the way it is:  each person does their part, and God fulfills His purposes according to His schedule.

 

Also in 2011 and 2012, we will celebrate our 50th Church Anniversary.  The first services were held in July 1961; we were incorporated in January 1962; and we were received by the Diocese in May of 1962.  I have instructed the planning committee, co-chaired by Jim Hagan and Maria Auld, that our anniversary is the occasion to ask three questions:

--What do we need to finish before we celebrate?

--How do we want to celebrate together as a parish family?

--What might we want to launch as we look ahead to the next 50 years?

A 50th Anniversary should be thought of like a Graduation from High School.  It is a big event!  It is no small thing to successfully complete school, and thus it should be celebrated with gusto.  However, such a graduation marks the beginning of one’s adventure known as life.  What comes next?  Will it be college, enlistment in the military, or going straight to work?  In our fifty years as a parish, we have accomplished much—not the least of which is planting Blessed Redeemer—but this is only the beginning. 

 

The Vestry will soon be given a copy of a Long Range Plan from fifteen or twenty years ago.  We will compare where the Plan anticipated the Lord calling us to grow, with where we are today.  We will use that Plan to consider, pray and draft a new plan for the next season of our parish life and ministry.  I believe God never wastes today what He started yesterday—even though He continually refreshes and renews His people and His Church.  I am curious then to see what He will lead us to do in the years ahead.

 

Specific Focal Points for 2011

--Begin to Celebrate our 50th Anniversary

--Rejoice with Blessed Redeemer and adapt our ministry accordingly

--Continue to look for opportunities to reach out to youth and families

--See Deacon Tom’s role increase in coordinating our pastoral care ministries

--Work with Cleusa Van Dorth to expand our music and worship

--See through our goal from last year to increase the visibility of missions in our parish life

 

Thank Yous:

First I want to give my personal and hearty thanks to George Tennant, Mickey Martin and Harold Clarke.  They were on the Search Committee and then were elected to the Vestry shortly after I arrived.  They were part of the process to call me here and then they put in extra effort to help me get established in the parish.  They have served us all very well.  Thank you to each of you. 

 

An extra thank you to Harold who served as Senior Warden this year: He stepped up to the plate, continuing to keep a watchful eye on the properties, but also being attentive to the health of our spiritual family.  He has come to me with questions and suggestions for which I am most grateful.

 

Second, I want to thank Hyacinth Clunie for not retiring from Children’s Ministry when she retired from teaching in the public schools.  She has taken the lead on Vacation Bible School and finding the new curriculum for Children’s Church.  She likes to do things quietly—often thinking of those things that I have forgotten.  Thank you Hyacinth.

 

Third, I want to thank the Office and Staff Team:  Deacon Tom, Cleusa Van Dorth, Susan Allison, Diane Smith, Rita Martin, Joyce Talabay, Lesley Russian, and the Welcome Center Team, Delores Barrett, Gail Huggins-Naidu, Alice Chapman, Cassandra Hurst, Frances Kocher, Rose Marson, Betty Palmer, Anita Persans, Veta Prescod, Ena Tennant, and Verda Holness.  Each one contributes to the public face of the Church.  Thank you.

 

Fourth, I want to thank the Properties Team, Harold Clarke, Bob Leonard, Jerome McKenzie, and Neville Parkinson.  They accomplished a lot this year—each one has taken on a particular interest in one area of the properties or another.  Together they have helped the Vestry and me identify our priorities and reasonable goals for maintaining and improving our facilities.  Thank you.

 

Lastly, I need to thank each and all of you as members of this parish.  You have shown me real and practical love and support—for me and my family, for my ministry and for our parish.  You continue to teach me what it is to be a parish family: we said farewell to 15 persons this year.  I find that the funerals become harder as I get to know each of you better and miss those who have died.  But also this year, as we faced the string of questions following the break-ins, you have taught me to be concerned for the youth who confessed to one of those events and to be concerned for the staff and members who might be in the buildings working late.  Thank you.

 

As we consider the years behind and the year to come, let’s keep in mind these favorite verses from Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians (chapter 3:20, 21):

 

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

DEACON’S REPORT

After resolving some health issues I was able to focus on diaconal ministry at Church of Our Savior.  I consider my primary role as Parish Deacon assisting the Rector with the liturgy and pastoral care.  Father Loren and I regularly review the sick and shut in list.  I assumed working with the lay Eucharistic visitors, a task that Bob Leonard faithfully did for many years.  I also shared the Lenten study of the Lord’s Prayer with Father Loren.

 

A Deacon should have an outreach ministry and I will be a volunteer Chaplain at Palm Bay hospital.  I have settled into a new life here in Palm Bay and on occasion Nancy and I will be away traveling; an enjoyable retirement experience.

 

Finally, on December 13, 2011, I will celebrate the silver anniversary of ordination to the Deaconate.  I look forward to observing this special event with my Parish family here at Church of Our Savior.

THE FRONT PORCH:  EVANGELISM AND WELCOME

How does someone become part of us unless we open the door to them?  Church of Our Savior has had a significant and proud history of learning how to open the door to all newcomers.  We want to build on that tradition.  The following ministries are key parts of our desire to share Jesus Christ with all people and to invite our neighbors to come and sit with us a while as they discover who He is and the life that He offers.

Black History Celebration

Ruth Castor, our chair, had been considering the possibility of letting the Black History Celebration take a break—in part because our partners, the US Post Office, has ended their Commemorative Stamp Unveilings.  When tragedy struck in Haiti in the form of the January 12th earthquake, Ruth quickly assembled her team and began to organize an event to lift up the people and needs of that country.  The monies raised were donated to assist in feeding the victims.

 

Following the event, the Committee did a review and set a course for 2011.  The Gospel Choir from Bethune Cookman College will be here, performing a concert entitled, “From Bach to Gospel”.  We hope that the event will both celebrate Black History and reach out to the community, so that young people in particular will have a reason to step inside the Church.

 

The Choir

2010 started off with a disappointment but finished strong.  The joint concert with St Joseph’s Church was unfortunately cancelled at the beginning of the year.  None-the-less, our Choir went on to contribute music at the Good Friday Service, to host the Hymn Fest, and to sing portions of Handel’s Messiah on Christmas Eve.  The new digital piano has proven to be a wonderful instrument as we have gone through the year. 

 

The Choir continues to expand its repertoire and to see its voice maturing.  Several members have volunteered to chant psalms, to sing solos, to play steel pan and piano, and to form an ensemble to lead the gathering songs.  Even Fr. Loren began to chant at the 8am service during Advent. 

 

Fr Loren has been working with the choir to see the Temple as the pattern of our worship at 10:30am.  This has taken some work to understand and to think through.  We will continue to experiment, review, and adjust the music to accomplish the vision of entering into the presence of God in worship.

 

Concerts By the Park

In September, we hosted the first outdoor concert on the south side of the Church building.  Bruce Iwinski has volunteered his ministry to provide the sound and to coordinate with the musical talent. We have had Jael, Tanya Price, and our own Caribbean Singers perform.  In 2011, we anticipate hosting both independent bands as well as Church bands.  The specific goal is to take the Church outside the box, outside the building, in order to let the neighborhood know that we are here and to invite them to come and join us for some good music.  The Concerts are on the second Saturday of the month.

 

God Cares Prayer Times

In response to the economy and the financial pressures that so many people are experiencing, we began a new service of prayer and encouragement on the third Saturday of the month.  The service uses the form of Morning Prayer with a Litany for those facing financial needs.  Although we have shared the service with neighboring Churches and have tried to get the word out in the neighborhood, we have not yet seen any visitors come to the service.  We will continue the service through April or May and then re-evaluate.

 

Greeters

We are blessed that many visit the Church of our Savior.  We greet with a smile, outstretched hand and open the door to all who come.  First time visitors are presented with a gift.  We pray they will worship with us always.  Our wonderful greeters serve as ushers on some weeks.  This year we have had a few retirements and so are always ready to welcome anyone who would like to serve in this ministry.

Newcomers

In January, we adopted a new strategy for welcoming our guests and newcomers.  In place of the monthly coffees after the 10:30am service, we began to give Welcome Gift Bags to our guests in the services.  We also adopted the Friendship Form.  We have been much more effective in identifying newcomers and beginning contact with them.  Each guest receives a letter from the Rector within the week (usually by Wednesday) and a telephone call from one of the Newcomers Team.  Later on, they receive additional invitations to Who Is Jesus, Anyway? and other special events.  Delores Barrett continues as the chair of the Newcomers Team.

 

“Who is Jesus, Anyway?”  A Course for the Curious

More than 175 people have now taken the course, which was again offered during the year.  We have now settled into a comfortable rhythm and comfort with the flow of the course.  This past year, we have specifically invited our recent newcomers and visitors to attend.  Neville Parkinson and Aloma Millings are the most frequent participants having taken the course four and three times respectively.

 

In 2011, our first need will be to appoint a course facilitator to coordinate the preparation and follow-up.  Our second task will be to enhance the support materials, including adding resources to the Library and Bookstore for those questions that come up in the course.  Lastly, I hope to revise and expand the course booklet itself this year:  it would be good for participants to have a little book that they can keep as a reference for other occasions or Bible studies here at the Church.

 

We now have a pathway to help each person begin as curious newcomer, to grow in their faith, and to discover significant service within the Church or community.  Who Is Jesus Anyway? has now been offered eight times at Our Savior to more than 175 participants.  It focuses on the basic questions of who is Jesus and what is it that He offers to us.  The second and third programs have each been offered once:  Where 2 Now? and SHAPEd to Serve.  The second program focuses on basic building blocks or disciplines for growing in the Christian faith.  The third explores how each of us is uniquely created and called to be His servant in the world today.

The Living Room   

THE LIVING ROOM:  WORSHIP AND PASTORAL CARE

Once inside, we desire that each person grow in their faith, experience more of God, and be cared for as part of the family.  The single most common compliment of Church of Our Savior has been how loving we are.  We want that love to meet people where they are currently at and to walk with them as God leads them to where He wants them to be.

Brotherhood of St. Andrew

Our Brotherhood chapter continues to meet on the second Saturday of each month for breakfast and fellowship.  Each month one of the brothers will lead a discussion focusing on one of the men in the Bible.  Sometimes it is rather intense, always it includes a good dose of laughter.  This year, we also met together with the chapter from St Paul's Anglican Church, Wickham Road, once in Palm Bay and once in Viera.  We have elected Francisco McLennon as chapter director--and are excited to be looking at adding some outreach to our program. (See 2010 Financial Statement, page 24.)

 

Children’s Church and Vacation Bible School

The year 2010 came and went by quickly but looking back we had a great year.  It might not have been quite noticeable, but thank God we had some very positive moments and experiences.  Really we are constantly reminded that God is at work in our midst and we offer Him our thanks and praise for all things.  Thanks to all the teachers who have so ably and graciously served every Sunday to make Children’s Church a success.  To the parents who faithfully bring their children to attend Children’s Church, and to all supporters who contributed by way of prayers, encouragement and snacks provided – a big thank you.

 

Much appreciation to ALL who participated in Vacation Bible School in any way – tending to the safety and welfare of the children, barbecuing, serving snacks, registering, teaching, wiping noses and eyes.  Thanks to the families that attended including those who are not members of Church of Our Savior.  And of course, the teenage helpers made a fantastic contribution to the whole program.  What a time we had!  Again VBS was a huge success and we anticipate an even better time this year.

 

You may wonder if any additional activities were added to the program since only a few children are seen here.  Yes, indeed.  Here are a few:

  • A Children’s Station of the Cross which was enacted on Holy Saturday.  Very well done and well received by all participants.
  • Since October every child in our congregation is being prayed for daily by some members of the church.
  • A new Children’s Church curriculum is in place which you’ll hear more about as time progresses.

 

I have often appealed to your for your assistance and I do so again.  You can contribute to this ministry by praying, offering your time, or by making suggestions as to changes which can be implemented to upgrade this program.  We are open for changes.  God bless you all.

Daughters of the King

The Order of the Daughters of the King is organized as a religious order.  Each daughter takes a lifetime vow to live by the rule of the order.  The mission of this order is the extension of Christ’s kingdom through prayer, service and evangelism. 

 

Vision Statement:  “Empowered by the Holy Spirit, our vision as Daughters of the King is to know Jesus Christ, to make Him known to others and become reflections of God’s love throughout the world.”  D.O.K. Handbook 2005 edition

 

At the time of initial membership we make a vow to pray daily, serve and evangelize, to pay our dues and funds promptly and to participate in all other offerings of the Order. 

 

Activities in the Order during 2010:

  • Three new Daughters were admitted to the Order in February.  On a sad note, one Daughter went home to be with the Lord.  We do remember her fondly and may her soul rest in everlasting peace.
  • We continue to do presentations at each meeting.  Each Daughter presents a talk on one of the women in the Bible.
  • Scripture passages and devotional readings are shared with the members.  We also share with each other the blessings God has bestowed on us and how He continues to work in our lives.  Members find the presentations and sharing an enhancement for their spiritual lives.
  • We organize and lead The Stations of the Cross at noon on Fridays during Lent.
  • Join the Brotherhood of St. Andrew for their corporate communion every fifth Sunday of the month.
  • Our annual corporate communion celebrated on All Saints Day at the 8:00 am service, members present renewed their vows.
  • Joined with the Episcopal Church Women to provide refreshments after the Ascension Day service in May and also after the Hymn Fest held in November.
  • Several Daughters attended the spring retreat in March; also the Deanery meeting held at Holy Apostles in Satellite Beach.
  • Many Daughters attended the General Assembly in September
  • We hosted a Board meeting in May.  Eucharist was celebrated by Rev. Hazel Kundinger in the absence of Rev. Loren Fox.
  • Father Loren attended the meeting in February and spoke to us about evangelism.  Linda Fox and Sharon Rohde followed with a presentation.
  • Participated in Parish Ministry Faire

 

 

 

Missions Prayer Points for Church of Our Savior:

  • Our focus on a long term basis to pray for our Parish life to be shaped biblically to witness both in our church and beyond.
  • Ask God to reveal to us through the Holy Spirit how to contribute to new missions in the Parish life and help to enhance the worship.
  • We remain dedicated in praying for each member in the Parish by distributing a list of members to each Daughter.  This list is also activated to contact members during times of emergencies and as directed by our Clergy, who also provides us with monthly prayer notes in which we pray for activities in and around the Parish.  Not forgetting to thank God for all his blessings.
  • On Ash Wednesday we co-hosted a Quiet Day with the Order of St. Luke.  Father Loren and Pastor Hazel were leaders.

 

Outreach:

  • Francine Leonard (now also Deanery coordinator) continues her work with the homeless, working with “Rock the Silence” group providing gift bags in November.  Once again the congregation was generous with their contributions. 
  • We continue to acknowledge the “shut ins” with tokens at Easter and Christmas.
  • We continue our contribution to El Hogar in Honduras yearly.

 

 Plans for 2011:

  • We will continue our focus on evangelism presentations of the women of the Bible by members. Sharing and discussing Bible verses and how God is working in our individual lives
  • Continue to share our love and caring for each Chapter member, also Parish members. 
  • We will also reach out to other chapters in the Diocese.
  • Our Rule of Service will continue – being Christ’s faithful servants in the extension of His kingdom
  • Regularly participate in the worship, study and work of the Church
  • Continue at all times to aid the clergy as is necessary for the spiritual up-building of the Parish.

Eucharistic and Lector Lay Ministries

The Lector and Lay Reader Ministry is made up of people who are approved by the local Priest to read the Lessons during services. These readings currently consist of the first reading (Old Testament), the Psalm, and the second reading (Epistle). The Lectionary for the past year has been from the Year C readings. On the first Sunday of Advent 2010, we began using the lessons for Year A.

The Lay Eucharistic Ministries are made up of Ministers and Visitors. These are licensed by the Bishop and are under the direction of the local Priest to assist in the administration of Holy Communion. Ministers assist with the distribution of the Elements at any Celebration of the Holy Eucharist. Visitors are licensed to take the Sacred Elements, directly following a primary Celebration of the Holy Eucharist, to members of the Congregation who were unable to be present at the Eucharist. In our Parish, this translates into three areas of service. The First Chalice is vested and serves in the Sanctuary during the entire celebration. One or more others may serve as unvested Chalice bearers during administration of the elements. The third area of service is that of providing Extended Home Communion (EHC) to those of our parish who are home bound or hospitalized. There are two different licenses for these ministries. A chalice bearer is licensed as a Lay Eucharistic Minister (LEM) and one who serves EHC is licensed as a Lay Eucharistic Visitor (LEV). If a person does both, two licenses are required.

 

We started the year with 31 Lay Ministers. During the past year, 2 persons stepped down, 2 persons stepped up, and 4 persons changed ministry participations. So in addition to the youth readers, there are now 31 adults serving in one or more of these ministries. Of these, 21 are scheduled as readers, 16 are licensed as LEMs, and 10 are licensed as LEVs. We have found it rewarding to be able to serve our brothers and sisters in these ways.

 

We had 92 EHC visits scheduled this past year serving 9 individuals. Other visits were made on an as needed basis for persons not on the schedule. The current process is that EHC is taken to each regularly scheduled person once a month or as otherwise desired by the recipient. There are currently 6 persons on our EHC schedule.

 

This year has seen several important changes. Bob Leonard has stepped down from the position of scheduler/coordinator and has passed these responsibilities on to Gail Naidu and Dcn Tom Williams. Gail is now responsible for scheduling readers and LEMs. Tom is responsible for scheduling LEVs as part of his pastoral care duties. In addition, this Advent we began using the Revised Common Lectionary instead of the BCP Lectionary.

 

You are welcome to take part in these forms of ministry in any of several ways. You can keep us in your prayers as we serve. You are welcome to attend an EHC visit by joining someone who is going out on Sunday. You can keep us up to date by letting us know of those who may have need of the EHC ministry. You can join in by committing your time to serve with us as a reader, LEM, and/or LEV.

Flower Guild

In the flower guild, it is our responsibility to adorn the altar with flowers weekly and on other special occasions.  We are a small group of women:   Theresa Castrillo, Mary Davis, Barbara Kaufmann, and Virginia Ingram.  I am pleased to say that we have a new addition to the guild.  Dian Brown has joined our group in the past year.  It is our honor and pleasure to alternate weekly preparing the flower arrangements.

 

The flower guild runs on the contributions given in memory of or in thanksgiving for members of the church.  As always we thank you for your generous support and positive comments.  God bless you.

International Order of St. Luke

Each year we try to tell you something about the OSL and this year we would like to talk about the emblem.  The following is taken from our handbook.

 

The emblem of the order is a cross within a circle, which together make an acrostic.  The motto is in Latin:  Jesu Esto MiHi Jesus, Dux-Lux-Rex-Lex.  Roughly translated means:  “O Jesus, be to me my savior (healer), my light, my king, and my law”

 

  1. Activities during 2010 included:  on Ash Wednesday, February 17, together with the Daughters of the King we had a combined Quiet Day at the Church, conducted by Fr. Loren and Pastor Hazel of Blessed Redeemer.

2.      Our Annual Healing Mission weekend was held on October 1 and 2.  The Very Reverend Hugh Bromiley and his wife Khara were our guest speakers and based their four teachings on Psalm 46:10, “Be Still and Know that I am God.”  Rev. Bromiley and his wife have been active in the Order of  St. Luke for many years, and shared personal stories of their witness of God’s healing power in the lives of people.  Their sharing inspired and brought much hope to us in our own suffering.  We were truly blessed by their teachings.

3.      We added three new members:  Johanna Lyons, Sybil Parkinson and Dorothy Gorbourne Gordon were inducted as full members during the healing mission weekend.

4.      We continue our study in “Digging Deeper.”  Teachings from this book are done by our Chaplain, Fr. Loren during our meetings on the third Thursday of each month.

5.      For the year 2011 we are praying for guidance in the hope that God will open new ideas as we plan to improve and expand this ministry to which God has called us to serve as His instrument of healing.  Fr. Loren will focus on encouraging more participation from our OSL members during prayer time on Sundays.

Pastoral Team

Greetings in the Name of the Lord,   

A spiritual smile spreads happy faith, far beyond the doors of the church. So laugh your way through the day with some happy humor.

 

The Pastoral team in coordination with the Church office serves as a link between the Church expectant and the sick in hospitals, rehab centers and homebound. The team also serve as an outreach from Church of Our Savior to the Life Care Center of Palm Bay by conducting Morning Prayer services on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month at 10 am.  We are most grateful to Fr. Loren for his prayers for this ministry and the congregation of Church of Our Savior for their prayers and support.

Speaking for the PowerPoint team, it has been a pleasure serving the congregation this past year. I wish to thank Mike Sasko who contributed to this ministry the past several years. I would like to introduce the team: Joe Auld, David Fox, Timothy Fox, Monica Harris, Bob Leonard Greg Streck, Marty Merkt and Tom Dame.

 

This is a ministry that supports several other ministries as we perform ours: Tape Ministry, Musicians, Choir, Readers and Clergy to name a few. We continue seeking others to help run the soundboard, computer presentation and recorders. This is a very rewarding ministry in which you would enjoy participating. Come join us!

Prayer Circles

You will find a poster in the parish hall, depicting our two prayer circles, inclusive of the names of our members. The arrows go clockwise, the order in which the members call or e-mail each other with a prayer request. However, should you wish to call in a name, you may contact any one of us and your request will go around both circles immediately. Names and/or situations are ALWAYS confidential with each member.

 

The names of our prayer circle members are:  First Circle:   Ray Lynde, Rachel & Julian Korti, Hyacinth Clunie, Christine & Dan Swatosh, Betty Palmer. Second Circle:  Rita Martin-Giuffrida, Ray Byrd, Elsie Cruz, Pat Krause, Rose Marson and of course, myself.

 

We on the Prayer Team, myself included, take this ministry very seriously. We are dedicated prayer warriors who enjoy spending time with Jesus. We have again been blessed in 2010 with answers to our prayers as only HE can answer them. We KNOW without a doubt that He hears every one of our prayers; we know too that He prays for you and me daily and, when those blessed surprises of healing miracles come, we are beside ourselves in joy! We find ourselves thanking Him over and over again! Here are some of the healing miracles we have experienced in our prayer ministry:

 

Awhile back, Pat Krause was to have surgery on her shoulder – everything was all set up for it with her doctor. She decided to attend the Wednesday, 10:00 A.M. Healing Service. All that were present prayed over her that morning. The next day, Pat was out of pain and her shoulder was fine! She called her doctor, cancelled her surgery and her shoulder remains fine to this day!

 

Deacon Mary Ellen Appleton has been plagued with lumps in one of her breasts this year. Recently, she discovered two more lumps in her other breast. After much prayer, she went to her doctor. Shortly thereafter, Mary Ellen’s doctor declared her cancer free!

 

New Babies!

Babies are one of God’s special miracles. Our church family was blessed with the birth of Ohin Hosey, baby brother to Omari, in August and Ashton Bailey, baby brother to Hunter, in December.

 

Twin baby girls, Emily and Erin Hines, Virginia & Ed Hines’ granddaughters, were born prematurely and spent much of this year in the hospital until they gained enough weight to go home. Emily wasn’t gaining as fast as her sister. We prayed harder than ever. Just before Christmas, the little ladies came home!

 

Little Amisha Ali – (10:00 Service) – broke her arm. One of the two bones was in two, out of place and partially twisted – likely due to Amisha turning her arm to break her fall. This happened on a Monday. On Wednesday, when she went in for surgery to move the bones into the correct position and to insert one or more pins to keep them stable, the pre-op team discovered the bones to be completely and properly aligned! The doctor cancelled the surgery and sent her home! Just to add to the wonder of it:  Amisha had already been wearing a cast preventing her from moving the muscles and bones. SO! Who moved the bones? To God be the glory!  AMEN!

 

We are so very grateful and happy about so many answers to prayer this year -that Deacon Tom’s appendectomy surgery went well and that he, so quickly, was able to get back and do the work our Lord has called him here to do…for many KINDS of healings, too, not always physical, that are going on all the time at our beloved “COOS.”

 

The longer I serve Him in this Prayer Ministry, the more I learn about our loving, heavenly Father. The most important thing I have learned this year is to have confidence in God – I mean, REAL confidence, REAL trust – when it is so difficult at times to hang onto that – when the doubt creeps in and you know you shouldn’t listen, but you find yourself saying, ‘But what if….?’

 

I was so low at one point that one night, I cried to Him, begging Him to send me a message. The very next morning, I was being urged to turn on the Christian channel. It was a program I don’t usually watch. I’m a Charles Stanley fan, and this was definitely not Charles Stanley.

 

The very first word I heard was ‘CONFIDENCE!’ and how there are so many places in the Bible where this word is used – then the preacher (John Haggee) quoted from one of the passages: ‘Have confidence in the Lord and you will receive your reward!’ I had received my answer!  Praise to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit!

 

Have a most blessed new year, no matter what!

Prayers of the People

The Prayers of the People for the 10:30 Service, consist of the following readers:  Olga Christie, Hyacinth Clunie, Sharon Dame, Tom Dame, (substitute), Shirley Flowers, Pat Krause and Joyce Talabay.

 

We are always on the look-out for new voices – brothers as well as sisters to come join us. We read a simple prepared script from the lectern each Sunday, following the Nicene Creed. Please do pray about coming on board. We would love to have you!

 

It is so much appreciated by us readers to hear you in the congregation, speaking out a name of a loved one or friend who is in the need of prayer – for after all, these ARE the Prayers of the People! When you do this, we ALL join in silently and pray for your person(s) too. There is so much power when the whole congregation is united with you! We are of one accord. So! Never be shy about speaking out in behalf of those needing prayer. Our Lord just may surprise you one day when you learn HIS answer to your prayer in HIS house!

Stephen Ministry

The Stephen Ministry motto, “Christ Caring for People through People” captures the core truths about what Stephen Ministry is and does.   We serve as caregivers for parish members referred by the rector. We have six certified Stephen ministers within the parish group.  Our prayer is that we will continue to provide caring service to church members. To learn more about this ministry as a care receiver or care giver, please contact Deacon Tom, 723-8032, or Betty Palmer, 953-4566.

 

Tuesday Morning Prayer

The Tuesday Morning Prayer time begins at 10 am in the Chapel located in the south end of the Education Building.  We pray for an hour for the known needs of the parish, the prayer requests listed on the Sunday Friendship forms, and the prayer notes provided by Father Loren.  We are a small group with big expectations for what God can and will do in our parish.  Even if you are not accustomed to praying out loud, you are welcome to join us because God hears the silent prayers also.

Therapeutic Exercise

Healthy mild exercise for people age 50 or more.  The movements are simple but very effective.  Class is offered Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  Come join us from 10:00 – 11:30 am. 

 

 

 
The Work Room   

THE WORK ROOM:  MISSIONS AND COMMUNITY CARE

God anoints each believer with the Holy Spirit and prepares us to serve others in our community and in the world.  The Work Room is where we step out in faith to serve those needs we see around us.  The following ministries are those that we know of and that we encourage people to be part of—either as specific efforts of Our Savior or as efforts of our partners.  (We also know that many of our members are involved in other opportunities to serve people in the love and witness of Christ Jesus.)

Caribbean Festival

The Caribbean Festival team sponsored the annual Church Dinner Dance which raised $1,391.36.  No disbursements were made this year to disaster victims.  (2010 Financial Statement, page 25.)

 

Dong Team

The Dong Team has gone through some changes this year.  We expanded our numbers and began monthly team meetings on the 4th Wednesday of each month at noon.  We found ourselves moving from a role of support to an existing Dong prayer network to a greater focus on educating the wider church and advocating for missions to the unreached with a specific focus on the Dong.  The “40 Days of Prayer for the Dong” which we launched at Harvest 2009 was an important part of this new effort, as it was adopted by Anglican Frontier Missions, used by another church preparing a short-term team to visit the Dong, and publicized at New Wineskins conference in April.  We also did a presentation to the Daughters of the King in September on missions and our work, and contribute regularly to the Good News to highlight missions issues at Church of Our Savior.   This year we explored getting involved in FIT’s International Friendship Program and have been blessed to befriend two students from China, who now join us at Church of Our Savior regularly.  We are now looking ahead to releasing a new devotional for Lent, based on the 40 Tales being used among the Dong to give those without access to the Bible a comprehensive look at God’s redemptive work throughout history.

 

Family Promise of Brevard, Inc.

Church of Our Savior continues to partner with Family Promise of Brevard.  Family Promise got its start in Brevard through the passion of Roy Flowers and the efforts of Our Savior.  The Brevard organization operates under the umbrella of the national Family Promise, which now has affiliates in forty one states.

 

The goal is to begin operations in August 2011—with one Church hosting up to three homeless families for one week at a time.  Churches are being recruited; monies raised; and a day center has been located on US 1 in Viera.  Several members of Our Savior continue on the Board and as volunteers with Family Promise.  Dan Swatosh became the board president in January 2010 and is looking forward to opening the doors in 2011.

 

Homeless Outreach

Each year, the county performs a census of the homeless in Brevard.  We have supported Rock the Silence by collecting toiletry kits for them to hand out during their outreach to the homeless and throughout the winter.  This year, Fran Leonard reported that more than 150 kits were donated by Church of Our Savior, Church of the Blessed Redeemer, and other friends.

 

Operation Shoebox

Joyce O'Flahtery once again spearheaded our collection of shoeboxes to be distributed by Samaritan’s Purse to those in need around the world.  The people with whom they share the boxes are often in such need that even the shoebox becomes a kitchen pantry or a clothes closet.  We exceeded our goal this year:  thank you to each who assembled the boxes and helped to collect them all.

 

Sewing Bee

The Seeing Bee is a small group that meets in the Parish Hall on the third Monday of each month from 10:00am-12:00 noon.  We gather to share sewing and crafts, as well as fellowship.  All supplies are donated and greatly appreciated. 

Over the past year, we have participated in the following projects:

·         On-going deliveries of hand-crafted gifts to the Palm Bay Community Hospital Emergency Room, for the Triage Nurse to distribute to children patients.

·         Comfort Pillows in support of Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, America's largest overseas U.S. Military Hospital.  Auxiliary groups at this hospital provide comfort and relief items for military members who become sick, injured, or wounded from service in Iraq, Kuwait, and Afghanistan.  Visit www.landstuhlhospitalcareproject.org for more information.

·         2nd Annual Harvest Silent Auction with this years’ proceeds given to CHAP (Christian Haitian American Partnership).  Visit www.chaphaiti.org for more information.

Plans for 2011 include new and interesting projects as we work together.  All are welcome to join us each month; we look forward to new members. 

 

Sharing Center of South Brevard

There is a food collection box in the Parish Hall.  Different parishioners quietly fill the box so that Mickey and Ray Martin are able to take a drive over to the Sharing Center at least once a month to deliver the food there.  Of course, the children at Vacation Bible School almost filled a canoe (or was it a flat bottomed gheenoe?) in July with canned foods and dried goods.  This year, the Sharing Center reports that they have more than doubled their distributions of food and other assistance.

 

You might also like to know that Fr. Loren does give financial assistance to those in need from his Discretionary Account.  However, the Office first directs people to both the Sharing Center and to Love Inc as our partners in caring for people.  Both organizations not only offer food and other financial assistance, but also offer information and other resources to give folks the best chance of getting back on their own feet.

 

 

 
The Roof   

THE ROOF:  STEWARDSHIP AND SUPPORT

A house without a roof is exposed to the hot sun and the drenching rains; the roof is there to serve those who are standing on the Front Porch, sitting in the Front Room and busy in the Work Room.  Therefore, these ministries support, aid, and facilitate our goals of welcoming people to come inside, of helping people grow in their faith, and of serving others in the world around us.

Church Office

The role of the Church office is to serve as clerical support to the ministries of the parish, the clergy, staff, and congregation and to represent the Church of Our Savior with professionalism and courtesy.  In addition to the regular duties of the office, in 2010, the office:

·         Supported three new ministries, The Dong Team, God Cares Prayer Time and Concerts By the Park

·         Updated friendship forms

·         Aided in development of ministry brochures

·         Coordinated PowerPoint graphic design/color with lectionary year

Weekly Bulletin:

Please note the following criteria for placing announcements in the weekly bulletin:

  • Announcement deadline is Wednesday at 12 noon
  • You can submit your announcement by email to the church office at office@oursaviorpalmbay.org
  • Please indicate the begin and end date for which you want the announcement to appear

Good News:

  • Submissions deadline is the 15th of prior month, i.e. January 15th for publication in the February Good News
  • You can submit your article by email to the church office at office@oursaviorpalmbay.org
  • Copyrighted Submissions:  Please include the source when submitting anything from another publication (book, newspaper, magazine.)  This includes the original author’s name, the publication name, and the publication date.  When in doubt, please obtain permission to preprint.

 

Goals for 2011:

·         Bring ministry brochures up to date

·         Modernize business cards (current supplies need replenished)

·         Implement cost savings (office supplies; advertising; printing)

·         Enhance communication of Church news within the congregation

·         Seize opportunities to increase awareness of COOS within the community, i.e. cost free advertising

·         Develop detailed instruction booklet for duties of the office

 

Most importantly, we will seek to serve God through our work in the Church office by treating all people with respect, appreciation and courtesy.

Computer Team

Julian Korti, Tom Dame, Bob Leonard and Fr. Loren have made major changes to the way we use our computer systems this past year.  Julian has focused on hardware in the Office and now the Welcome Center; Tom has kept the computer in the Church Building operational.  Bob has begun posting Sunday sermons and Wednesday teachings on the parish website (as well as lots of parish photos).  Fr. Loren has expanded the website and launched a site on Facebook.

 

At least four of every five visitors to Church of Our Savior have already visited our website before driving into the parking lot.  It is how we make our first impression.  It is also how we communicate more and more information and resources within the Church.  If you’d like to add your skills to the Computer Team, please don’t be shy—let one of us know or contact the Church Office.  Thank you.

 

Finance Committee

We are a group of dedicated parishioners that Praise  GOD and love to do HIS work has Guardian of our parish income.  Annually we generate a budget that is presented to the vestry for approval. Church salaries are not included in our budget presentation but we are able to give suggestions. One of our responsibilities is to sign checks for products or services needed. Our bookkeeper and team usually write checks with detail of the checks needed. Some of our members are selected to sign these checks and they are always willing to do the job they are ask to do. Recently we were required to generate a draft copy of procedures required for large contracts such as the Parish Air condition and the Church painting. This year we hope to get the “large contract procedure” approved by the vestry for use in the future.

Properties Team

Harold Clarke, Jerome McKenzie, Bob Leonard, Neville Parkinson and Greg Streck all played a part in the improvements of our properties this past year.  Neville rescued countless chairs from the garage; Greg and Bob made a major fix to the air-conditioning in the Education Building (a hole in the system meant we trying to cool the outdoors rather than the indoors!).  Harold, Jerome and Bob helped the Vestry build a to-do list not only for 2010, but also for 2011 and beyond.  The kitchen sink was replaced.  Perimeter lighting was enhanced with new, very energy efficient LED lamps; a pole lamp was ordered for the parking lot.  We asked FPL to replace one utility light with a better fixture.  The Church building got a major upgrade—fixing the cracked stucco, repairing the hole in the eaves, getting a fresh coat of paint, and getting the name of the Church painted up high so that it is visible across the park out to Port Malabar Boulevard.  Last January, the crushed concrete was poured in the parking lot to protect the sewer pipe; a garden was planted at the corner of the driveway—and the field was opened for Church parking.  Unfortunately, a number of repairs had to be made following a series of break-ins; but with God’s grace, the repairs, lighting and even the alarm system have been configured to increase our ministry as well as to respond to the break-ins.  Thank you to these men for their efforts, thank you to the congregation for your contributions that have made these projects possible, and a big thank you to our God for leading us in these practical steps.

 

Vestry

In 1995, I moved from New York to Florida after serving in my former church, St. Peters Anglican/Episcopal in various capacities for several years.  Soon after I became a member of Church of Our Savior and became involved in the life of the church.  At COOS I have served as an usher, vestry member, junior warden serving for three terms and finally as the senior warden.  The senior warden is appointed by the Rector from the vestry membership and is involved in all of the functions of the church.  This includes the upkeep and maintenance of the physical buildings, the church grounds as well as the financial/budgets of the church for the present and future years. 

 

Serving as a vestry member junior and senior warden, means giving of your time, and energy unselfishly to the work of the Lord.  For me it has been a very rewarding experience.  The vestry meets once a month (see the date and time in the Sunday bulletin or Good News.)  Any COOS member is welcome to attend the meetings, make suggestions and comments, however, only vestry members are allowed to vote.

Welcome Center

The Welcome Center serves as the reception area for the office and is staffed by volunteers who each work several days each month during regular office hours.

 

In its second year of operation, the Welcome Center volunteers continue to expand their responsibilities and initiative with a reduction in the amount of supervision as needed in the previous year.   They are invaluable for the work they provide each week in the preparation of the Sunday bulletin, materials for ministry events, and the dozens of telephone calls needed to be made each week.  Each volunteer works to create a welcoming atmosphere with their professionalism, cheerfulness and compassion to all who walk through the door or telephone.  You will also notice they keep the room clean and nicely decorated according to the season.

 

Goals for 2011:

·         Volunteer Recruitment (needed for the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month and the 2nd and 4th Tuesday)

·         Process assistance applications

·         Increase use of computer

THE FOUNDATION:  JESUS CHRIST HIMSELF

Jesus taught that the wise man builds his house on the rock, not on shifting sand.  The funny thing about houses is that they always are getting lived in, and frequently are less than tidy and organized.  That’s the way a house feels like home.  Our number one goal therefore is to always keep Jesus and the good news of His death and resurrection as the foundation that holds everything else together.  After all, this is His house and we are His family.
